KHP 2026-11: Kansas Highway Patrol Held Wall-Breaking Ceremony

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) held a wall-breaking ceremony on August 11 marking the start of renovations to the first floor of the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka, Kansas.

In early 2026, Governor Laura Kelly and the Kansas Legislature approved $4.0 million to renovate space at the Curtis State Office Building, making way for relocation of the Kansas Highway Patrol’s General Headquarters. By repurposing recently vacated state office space, 120 valued members of the Patrol will be in a single facility rather than spread across multiple buildings in Downtown Topeka. This relocation will provide a modern work environment for headquarters units such as Human Resources, Fiscal, and Recruiting and Community Engagement.

The KHP has occupied its current space at the Elks Building and Jayhawk Tower for nearly 40 years. The new facilities will better accommodate engagements with the public, state officials, and local law enforcement agencies.

Governor Kelly and Secretary of Administration Adam Proffitt joined KHP and fifty guests for the wall-breaking ceremony.

“We are fortunate for this opportunity to relocate our headquarters to the Curtis State Office Building,” said Colonel Erik Smith, KHP Superintendent. “The building will meet our operational needs and enhance public access, all while making efficient use of existing state infrastructure.”

“This move will enhance the security posture of the capitol complex and hopefully be a better functional space for the officers and staff who will work in the Curtis Building,” said Secretary Proffitt. “KHP’s presence around the buildings ensures that members of the public and state employees can feel safe.”

The Curtis State Office Building was built in 2001 and named after Charles Curtis, who was born in North Topeka in 1860 and served as Vice President under Herbert Hoover. Other state agencies located in the Curtis Building include the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
