Kansas National Guard to assist with debris removal in Wyandotte County
Soldiers and Airmen from the Kansas National Guard will deploy to Wyandotte County to assist with debris removal in that county. The Guardsmen will deploy with three dump trucks, two front-end loaders, 15 chainsaws, and 43 Army and Air Guard personnel.
Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall impacted areas of central and eastern Kansas, late on August 18, 2026, into the early morning of August 19. Wyandotte County sustained significant impacts due to strong storms resulting in vegetive debris, damage to utility infrastructure, essential facilities, residences, and businesses. Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation on Aug. 21 due to damage from this system.
“When severe weather strikes, Kansans come together to support one another, and that is exactly what we are seeing in Wyandotte County,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “The State of Kansas is committed to standing alongside local communities as they recover and rebuild. We are deploying equipment and personnel from our state agencies, to help remove debris, clear damaged areas, and support local emergency response efforts. We will continue coordinating resources and doing everything we can to support the community in the days ahead.”
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management, in partnership with their Emergency Support Function partners, have been coordinating assistance. KDEM has provided pallets of bottled water to support emergency responders and volunteers. A KDEM regional coordinator liaison is providing technical support in the Wyandotte County Emergency Operations Center. In addition, an Incident Support Team has been provided to assist with coordination of field operations, and an Emergency Operations Center Support Team has been provided to assist in the county’s emergency operations center.
KDEM has requested preliminary damage assessment from the Small Business Administration and will coordinate with local partners to support field assessments and documentation of disaster-related impacts. Additional damage assessments are ongoing to determine other assistance that may be available.
Since Aug. 22, the Kansas Department of Transportation has provided three debris removal tasks forces with five dump trucks, one front-end loader, pickups and two chainsaw operators.
