September 14 is Kansas Preparedness Day at the Kansas State Fair

To help Kansans prepare for severe weather and other emergencies, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, in cooperation with a variety of state, local and nonprofit emergency response agencies, will host Kansas Preparedness Day at the Kansas State Fair Monday, Sept. 14.

Governor Laura Kelly has signed a proclamation designating September as Kansas Preparedness Month.

“Since the days of our Kansas pioneer ancestors, the weather has been a blessing and a curse for us,” Governor Kelly said. “While it brings the rain and sunshine vital to our Kansas crops and livestock, it can also bring tornadoes, severe storms, floods, excessive heat, blizzards, and a host of other emergencies that threaten the health and safety of our citizens. Although we can enjoy the best of Kansas weather, we all need to be prepared to face the worst.”

Visitors to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson on Sept. 14 will have the opportunity to learn how to better prepare and protect themselves from natural and man-made disasters during Kansas Preparedness Day. Information tables and displays of emergency vehicles will be set up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. near the Administration Building inside the entrance of Gate E-1 to provide disaster preparedness and public safety information.

Agencies and organizations participating in the Kansas Preparedness Day event include the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshal, Kansas Forest Service, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Emergency Management, Reno County Emergency Management – Community Emergency Response Team, Reno County Health Department, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Hutchinson Fire Department, National Weather Service, Kansas State Animal Response Team, Kansas Search and Rescue Dog Association, and the Salvation Army.

Sept. 14 is Dillons’ Dollar Day at the Fair; admission is $1 or free with a Dillons’ card.
